Plan & Risk Assess Before You Build
Always carry out a detailed site‑specific risk assessment and plan scaffolding work thoroughly before erection. This should include environmental conditions, proximity to the public, loading needs, and fall hazards.

Use Only Competent, Trained Personnel
Scaffolds must be designed, erected, altered, and dismantled only by competent workers under competent supervision (e.g., CISRS‑trained scaffolders). Proper training reduces errors and legal risk under the Work at Height Regulations 2005.

Follow UK Scaffold Design Guidance
Use recognised UK standards such as NASC TG20:21 and, for fall prevention, SG4:22 to ensure structures are sound and meet industry best practice — especially for complex systems.

Inspect Frequently with Tagging or Digital Systems
Scaffolding must be inspected before first use, at least every 7 days, and after severe weather or changes. Use visible tags or digital tracking systems to show inspection status and protect operatives.

Ensure Safe & Stable Foundations
Set scaffolds on firm, level, and load‑bearing ground. Never erect on soft or uneven surfaces without adequate sole boards or ground preparation to support loads safely.

Load Limits & Distribution Awareness
Respect the scaffold’s load capacity (workers + tools + materials). Overloading can lead to collapse — balance weight and communicate limits to all teams.

Provide Safe Access & Egress
Offer safe ways onto platforms — ladders, stair towers or designated access features — and avoid climbing on frames or braces. Maintain three points of contact when moving vertically.

Install Edge Protection & Fall Prevention
Always fit guardrails, midrails, and toe boards where there’s a risk of falling >2 m. Combined with harnesses and safe systems of work, these greatly reduce fall incidence.

Monitor Weather & Site Conditions
High winds, rain, snow, or ice can compromise scaffold stability and worker safety. Have clear “stop work” protocols for unsafe weather and re‑inspect after severe conditions.

Prevent Unauthorised Access & Maintain Site Security
Implement solid perimeter fencing, remove or guard ladders outside working hours, and always secure the scaffold to deter the public (especially children) from climbing and risking injury.
